CLAIM: Ghana’s Communication Minister Reduces Data Price by Up To 15%

On June 27, 2025, a news blog on the microblogging platform, X, claimed that Ghana’s communication minister, Sam George, has reduced data prices by 15 percent. The post which included a picture of George was captioned “Ghana’s Ministry of Communications has reduced cost of data by up to 15%. Additionally, MTN 92gb plan will become 214gb. Airtel 92gb, increases to 256gb, for the same price. They hope to achieve around 50% cost reduction by Q4. Sam George has been Minister for only four months.”

This claim has garnered over 509,000 views and about 6,600 replies, reposts, quotes, likes and bookmarks, as of when this report was published. In the comment section, @jenslaw_ wrote “While their counterparts in Nigeria increase data plan by 50%. Nigeria is in the hand on wrong drivers.” While @FranciscoBrainiac said “Guess who will bear the losses for decrease in price? Nigerians. They will increase prices in Nigeria while reducing the data and still make it finish fast with their awful networks, and the government will do nothing. A working government makes life easier for it's people.”

VERIFICATION

On June 10, 2025, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George announced that data bundle volumes across all major networks will increase at no extra cost effective July 1, 2025. He said MTN Ghana will implement a 15 percent increase across all data bundles. Specifically, the 399 Ghana cedis bundle, previously offering 92 gigabytes (GB) under the 350 Ghana cedis tier, will be restored or upgraded to 214 GB, all at the same price.

For AT Ghana, formerly AirtelTigo), a 10 percent across‑the‑board bundle increase was announced. Their 400 Ghana cedis bundle, previously 195 GB, will rise to 236 GB for the same cost.

The claim about Airtel 92 GB becoming 256 GB,  is not supported by the official announcement. Also, AT Ghana’s announcement does not mention a 256 GB bundle. Rather, it stated that the 195 GB for 400 Ghana cedis will rise to 236 GB at the same price.

The mention of “cost reduction by up to 15%” is slightly misleading as prices were not dropped, rather, volume increased by 10–15 percent without changing the price.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Ghana’s communication minister has reduced data prices by 15 percent is MISLEADING. There is an increase in the volume of data, not a reduction in the price. Additionally, MTN is the only one to implement the 15 percent increase while AirtelTigo implemented a 10 percent volume increase and it cannot be confirmed that Airtel is increasing its 92 GB package to 256 GB.
