We do our work by diligently following the international best practices in fact-checking and adhering to the strict guidelines of the International Fact-Checking Network’s fundamental operating principle of nonpartisan and transparent fact-checks.
We monitor news platforms and statements circulating across the media space or from the pool submitted by our esteemed readers. The claim moves to the top of the pile if it was made by a public officer, politician, business leader or revolves around an important subject. The claim is prioritised if it is a viral image or video circulating on social media platforms.
If the claim is made as a statement of fact or opinion, the team goes ahead to do a preliminary research through verifiable sources and online tools to confirm if the statement or opinion was made. When it is confirmed that the claim has become widespread, we begin to identify and collate evidence to debunk or confirm it.
We go back to the source to analyse the spread of the claim on social media circles, so we will have real-time and verified information on its potential impact both online and offline.
When every aspect of the fact-checking has been covered, the researcher goes ahead to write up the report, explaining any evidence that supports the claim or debunks it. The report ends with a subheading titled conclusion which summarises the report and explains the verdict we have reached. The published report has a link or quoted source for every evidence mentioned in it.
Having knowledge of the potential impact is how we are able to map out how to reach out to the information source and the platform where it was posted that they are culpable in spreading misinformation, this comes after we have verified the claim and published the report
