Is The United States Deporting Over 3,690 Nigerians?

There has been a circulating claim on X that about 3,690 Nigerians living in the United States of America are currently facing deportation by the American government.

One of such claims was posted by Comrade Haroun on January 29, 2025 on X. The post has an image of  U. S president, Donald Trump with the caption: “It has been revealed through a leaked document that at least 3,690 Nigerians in the United States are facing deportation by the American government, with the number of individuals to be removed categorized by their respective countries of origin.”

A thorough check through X revealed that the claim was also posted by other users, here, here and here.

VERIFICATION

Google reverse image search was used to ascertain if the image used in the X user’s post has any relation with the deportation claim. Search results showed that the image was first published  2 months ago as seen here and here. The image’s caption from News10 and WCIA reads, ‘President-elect Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with the House GOP conference, Nov. 13, 2024, in Washington. (Allison Robbert/Pool via AP, File).’

Keywords searches, “how many Nigerians risk deportation from the United States” and “is the United States deporting Nigerians” were then used to verify the details of the claim.

AriseTV reported that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has identified approximately 3,690 Nigerian nationals among over 1.4 million non-citizens with final orders of removal as of November 24, 2024. This data is part of ICE’s non-detained docket, which includes individuals who have been ordered to leave the U.S. but are not currently in detention.

This report was also corroborated by The Punch, Premium Times, The Cable and PM News. A thorough search revealed that the figures came from a 7-page FOX NEWS document that detailed 1,445,549 non-citizens were on ICE’s non-detained docket with final orders of removal, as of November 2024.

In a swift response to the alleged deportation news, the federal government through The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, has assured of its preparedness to receive Nigerians who may be deported from the United States. NiDCOM stated that “The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee, comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, should there be mass deportation of Nigerians from the US.”

It is important to note that a final order of removal does not guarantee immediate deportation. Various factors, such as legal appeals, asylum claims, and international agreements, can delay or prevent enforcement. Additionally, ICE faces challenges in executing these orders due to legal protections and diplomatic considerations.

CONCLUSION

The claim about the deportation of over 3690 Nigerians from the United States by the U.S government is TRUE, as findings revealed that they are on the list of ICE’s non-detained docket with final orders of removal, as of November 2024.
