Ukraine That Has A Population of 200,000 and Under Siege of War is Assisting Nigeria With Food Donation

On July 2, 2025, an X user @Biafra Daily claimed that Ukraine, a country of 200,000 people and under the siege of war, is sending food relief to Nigeria, a country of 230 million people.

The post was accompanied by screenshot of a report published by The Punch newspaper, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s picture as a feature image. It was captioned, A country of 200,000 people are assisting a country of 230 million people . This is how Ukraine 🇺🇦 send a relief food assistance to Nigeria. A country under the war is assisting Nigeria. Begging everywhere” [sic].

VERIFICATION

Ukraine has been involved in a devastating war since Russia invaded its territory in February 2022. Nonetheless, the country has continued to maintain its diplomatic relations with many countries while also participating in global humanitarian aid efforts.

One notable example is Ukraine’s donation of 25,000 tonnes of grain to Nigeria in January 2023, despite battling war, internal conflict, humanitarian displacement, and infrastructure challenges. This was under the ‘Grain From Ukraine’ initiative and part of the country’s efforts to bolster its relationships with African nations. Other beneficiaries of the initiative include African countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Sudan.

Ukraine sent 25,000 tonnes of grains to Nigeria as part of its Grain from Ukraine initiative, a program to help countries facing food insecurity due to the global grain crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The shipment was funded in partnership with the United Nations’ World Food Programme, WFP, and other donor countries such as the USA, France, Canada, and Finland. Hence, the insinuation that Nigeria begged for food from Ukraine despite the ongoing war with Russia is misleading.

Ukraine And Nigeria Population Count

The post from Biafra Daily also claimed that Ukraine is a country with only 200,000 people. While Ukraine has experienced a sharp decline in its population due to war-related displacement, casualties, and migration, the current population is over 38 million according to reliable data from the World Bank and Worldometer. For Nigeria’s, the last census held in 2006, puts the country's population at 140,431,790. However, current Worldometer's estimate shows that the country’s population is over 237 million.

CONCLUSION

The claims are MISLEADING. According to credible data, Ukraine’s population is over 38 million, not 200,000 and the insinuation that Nigeria is begging Ukraine for food relief is MISLEADING.
