A video circulating on social media purports to show a yet-to-be identified Police officer with a woman lying helpless on a sofa in a private room, is making rounds with a claim that the woman was allegedly raped by the officer.
An X user, The Benin Blogger with 745 followers posted the clip of alleged rape on October, 12, 2024 with a caption; “A Police officer reportedly raped a woman suspect inside the police Station in Edo State”.
In the 14-seconds footage posted on X, the clip displayed a man wearing a police uniform without trousers and a lady who wore black long gown lying lifeless on a blue couch. A female voice who spoke behind the camera said, “Why I no go do am. Na you wan put me for trouble abi. Na you wan put me for trouble abi”.
The post has generated over 87,100 views, 172 replies, 567 reposts and quotes, 267 likes and 81 bookmarks as of press time.

An X user, @JardaniJovonovv who commented under the claim shared by The Benin Blogger said, “Lack of consequences is the reason such atrocities happen and even the Ogas in the system also do the same thing that’s why these crimes go unpunished. The average Nigerian police officer is a hardcore criminal, they recruit the worst of the society into the force”.
Another X user, @Chimacoeche replied saying, “This is what they do every day. Criminals everywhere!” while @OgbeniBiodun commented, “Just throw the entire NPF into the bottomless pit”.
The Nigerian Police Force has always been plagued by controversial news, four months ago, a policeman was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in his office and still under investigation, hence, it is imperative to verify if the video and accompanying claim.
VERIFICATION
NV-A extracted screenshots of the footage and subjected it to Google Lens, but the results from the image search did not match the viral clip.
Further search through the X handle of the spokesman of Edo State Police Command, SP Moses Joel Yamu, revealed his reply to a post about the incident, confirming that the incident happened and the suspects are now in custody.
“The erring officers involved in this unfortunate incident have been taken into custody. There orderly room trial has also commenced in line with the Police SOP,” his tweet reads.
When Yamu was contacted on the phone, he corroborated that the alleged suspect had been arrested and under investigation.
“The case is still an alleged rape and not an actual rape yet, and the man in talk has been arrested and investigation is still on going”, Yamu said.
Also, further searches show there are no credible newspapers that have reported the incident.
CONCLUSION
The claim that a police officer allegedly raped a woman is TRUE and the police spokesman for the state confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and under investigation.
