Burkina Faso and Russia Recognise Biafra As An Independent State

Kingsley Okon

On October 27, 2025, an X user @BLA_Network made a claim that Burkina Faso and Russia have agreed to recognise the United States of Biafra (USB) as an independent nation separate from Nigeria. The post had four images featuring: Russian President Vladimir Putin; military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore; the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB’s flag and; the self-acclaimed deputy prime minister of the United States of Biafra, USB, Ngozi Orabueze. The caption on the post reads, “Breaking: Bukina Faso & Russia Authority will recognise the United States of Biafra Independent! What a joyful day ahead!”

When this report was published, this claim had over 28,100 views and about 1,000 replies, reposts, quotes, likes and bookmarks. In the comment section, @TYBabatunde wrote  “What about Israel? Are you not the lost tribe of Israel again? Foolish man.” and @EAE_Africa said “We want Biafra but please stop spreading fake news”.

VERIFICATION

The United States of Biafra movement has made multiple public appeals to international bodies and governments, including Nigeria, seeking recognition. However, no sovereign state or international organisation, including the United Nations, African Union, or ECOWAS has recognised Biafra or any group claiming to represent it.

Recent reports confirm that Burkina Faso and Russia have strengthened their defense and cooperation ties, particularly through military and security partnerships in the Sahel region. However, these collaborations have no connection to Biafra or the USB movement.

Checks for official statements from the governments of Burkina Faso or Russia affirm there is no evidence confirming any recognition of the United States of Biafra.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Burkina Faso and Russia have agreed to recognise the United States of Biafra (USB) as an independent nation is FALSE. There is no official evidence that Burkina Faso or Russia have recognised or intend to recognise the United States of Biafra (USB) as an independent nation. Neither government has made any public statement or diplomatic move in that regard.
