CLAIM: Dele Farotimi Vows To Write Petition Over Arrest and Defamation Case

On December 31, 2024, a facebook page, @jayceeblogNG made a post that a Nigerian lawyer, Dele Farotimi has vowed to petition the Nigerian Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee and seek for a permanent licence revocation for the lawyers involved in his arrest and defamation case.  

Dele Farotim is a Nigerian lawyer, author and political activist. He was arrested on December

3, 2024 by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in connection to his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.’ Farotimi’s arrest was made after claims of defamation were brought against him by Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He was eventually granted bail by an Ekiti state Magistrate court on December 20, 2024.

VERIFICATION

NV-A conducted an online search with the keywords “Dele Farotimi and LDPC” and the search results included news links around his arrest, release and the aftermath.

The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LDPC) is a committee that investigates and addresses cases of legal misconduct by the legal professionals in Nigeria. 

NV-A notes that earlier, Afe Babalola sent a petition to LDPC regarding Farotimi, seeking the revocation of his law licence but the petition was declined by the committee. According to the report, the committee stated that it did not have jurisdiction over matters related to published works and recommended that those who were dissatisfied with the publication seek legal action in the regular courts.

Meanwhile, on December 29, 2024, Farotimi  hosted a live stream  on  his personal Youtube channel, where he talked about his experience in prison. He mentioned on timestamp 26:12 to 26:35, that he will be writing petitions to the LDPC so as to ensure that some lawyers never get to practice law in the country again.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Dele Farotimi said he will be writing petitions to the LDPC is TRUE. He said this himself on a live streamed video on his youtube channel on December 29, 2024.
