What is Egusi soup?
Egusi seeds come from a gourd that looks like a watermelon, but it is not for eating because it tastes bitter. People grow these gourds mainly for their seeds. These seeds are like small pumpkin seeds but creamier in taste. People call them melon seeds. You can eat them as a snack, use them to add flavour to food, or press them for oil.
One popular way to use the melon seeds is to make Egusi soup. It is a favourite dish in many West African countries, especially among the Yoruba people. Egusi soup is made by grinding melon seeds and adding vegetables, meat, or fish. It has a delicious and rich taste that many people enjoy.
Although the melon seeds have a substance called phytochemical which works as antimicrobial agents and reduces the chance that viruses and bacteria can grow in the body.
Also when an infection does occur, phytochemicals help ensure your immune system has an appropriate response. They can also reduce ongoing inflammation associated with inflammatory diseases.
Does Egusi soup help men have long lasting erection?
Researchers who have studied Egusi seeds found that they have more fat than watermelon seeds and fluted pumpkin seeds. A food blogger revealed that when you add a few chunks of stockfish and two pieces of meat to Egusi soup, the meal contains around 700 calories per serving.
A search of the keywords, ‘egusi melon erection men’ on Google search led to several articles and pages about ‘Melon Seed’(Egusi) on the benefits and history of “Egusi Seeds” but out of over 50 links surveyed, none was a research, article or journal detailing how Egusi soup helps men with long-lasting erection.
The Chief Dietitian/Nutritionist at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Farotimi Omotola, clarified to N-VA that the belief that Egusi soup enhances male erection is a misconception.
She explained that watermelon seed is often mistaken for melon, noting that Egusi lacks any components that can boost erections, unlike watermelon seeds that contain citrulline, which aids in blood flow.
Omotola said: “It is a misconception. Egusi has no content that can boost erection but watermelon seed which is often called melon seed contains what is called citrulline that can add up together to produce red blood cells and when red blood cells are well produced in the body system, such a person will perform actively.”
Similarly, a dietician from Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Jesutomilayo Adepoju who spoke to N-VA said the claim is likely a myth. She explained that the Nigerian method of preparing Egusi soup includes a lot of fat and oil, making it highly unlikely that it will aid long lasting erection.
She said, “As Nigerians, we use lots of palm oil, some people if the palm oil is not dancing on their food they wouldn't eat it. So, egusi itself has fat content and a meal that has high fat content puts a man at risk of having erectile dysfunction.
“Egusi has too much oil and fats in its cooking process and excess fats in the bloodstream will reduce the flow of blood to the penis.”
CONCLUSION
The claim made by the X user that Egusi soup helps men with long lasting erection is FALSE as there is no medical evidence to backup the claim.
