On January 2, 2025, a Facebook page Igbo History shared a post stating that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state and presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP in the 2023 general election, made a total of N677 million in donations to schools and hospitals.
The post reads: “Breaking News: Peter Obi Donates N677 Million to Schools and Hospitals in 2024. The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, former governor of Anambra State, and billionaire businessman, Mr. Peter Obi, has reportedly donated at least N677,000,000 to various schools and hospitals in 2024. This philanthropic gesture aligns with Mr. Obi’s longstanding commitment to education and healthcare development in Nigeria. Here is the breakdown of the beneficiaries of his donations:

This claim, which has attracted over 600 likes, was also posted by another Facebook account, here.
NV-A found the original post to be from an X user @Sweegu who quoted Obi’s New Year message on January 1, 2025 with two images containing the compiled list of donations made by the ex-presidential candidate in 2024. The fact-checker went on to verify this list and the total figures that have been circulating since this was made public.
VERIFICATION
Through Google, NV-A researched the list presented in connection with the ex-presidential candidate’s name, and the search turned up with various articles surrounding the claim.

From the verified list of donations above, the total amount that was donated by Peter Obi is 537 million naira. The 120 million naira pledge to Holy Rosary College, Nsugbe was not included in the total as it was a two-year commitment and there is no record verifying the amount that has been reimbursed to the college. Also, the amount donated by Obi to the Bimbo Oloyede 100 million fund remains undisclosed.
