Did a Man Assault and Threaten Teachers in a Lagos School?

A video purportedly showing a man assaulting and threatening teachers in a classroom is making rounds on LinkedIn.  This video was posted by a LinkedIn user identified as Titilayo Mafikuyomi on October 17, 2024. The 46-seconds footage showed a man assaulting a female teacher when another female rushed to the scene to intervene and mediate, in the middle of this, the person who was recording the video was also being threatened by the man.

The caption on the post with the video reads: “🛑  Violence Against Teachers Must Stop! 🛑It is heartbreaking and unacceptable to witness situations like this where a parent attacks a teacher. As educators, we dedicate our lives to nurturing and guiding children. No teacher should ever have to fear for their safety while doing their job.”

“Violence has no place in our schools or in any space where children and educators interact. This incident is not just an attack on a single teacher—it’s an attack on the teaching profession and the values of respect and collaboration that are essential to learning environments”

“I urge parents, schools, and communities to come together and prioritize the safety, respect, and well-being of teachers. Teachers are the backbone of society, shaping the next generation. We need stronger measures in place to ensure that they are protected and valued.”

“To my fellow educators: You deserve to work in environments where you feel safe, supported, and respected. Let’s continue to advocate for better treatment and stand together against any form of violence. #RespectForTeachers  #SupportTeachers #SafeSchools #teaching #teacheradvocacy (Content Warning: The video attached contains a violent incident that may be distressing to some viewers.)”

The claim posted by Mafikuyomi, who had 950 followers on LinkedIn, had generated 194 reactions, 423 comments, and 41 reposts as of the time this report was published. Comments under the post ranged from questioning the actions of the aggressor to reprimanding him and asking for the name of the school where the incident happened.

Bernard Odiase who commented on the post asked “What must have led to this? The matter should be investigated…There are more civilised options to go about this (venting your anger). This man MUST be handed over to the police, and his child/ward expelled!”

Another LinkedIn user, Glory Onibudo also commented, “This is really heartbreaking. Teachers are no longer valued. Parents talk down on teachers considering that they also have families. This parent might have his grievance but addressing it this way is terrible. Teachers lives matter abeg.”

Victor Adebayo also said, “Never respond emotionally. I will simply call in the police to arrest him, get the school lawyer to sue him for assault and bodily harm on my staff member. I won’t just go shouting, I will respond appropriately. Ps: I hope the teacher did not do something despicable though. Child molestation and the likes. Cause if it’s in the discharge of the teachers duty, walahi, that parent will hear it. Just approach it legally. Simple.”

Mafikuyomi while replying to Ezichukwu Stephen’s post in the comments section clarified that, “I don’t have more details about the parent but I know this happened at Rosebud school in Idimu.” This gave the fact-checker a name and location for the school, and we went on to verify the authenticity of the video.

VERIFICATION

NV-A reached out to Mafikuyomi who shared the video on LinkedIn to acquire the full video, but she clearly stated she only had the video posted on her page.

Mafikuyomi said, “The only information I have was that an angry male parent beat up a female teacher in class in front of the pupil, the female teacher was trying to save his child, but he heard something else.” She further confirmed that it happened in a school in Idimu, Lagos.

When NV-A subjected the screenshot of the footage to Google Reverse Image search, the results showed a correlation of the location and the school where the incident occurred. The school was identified as Rosebud School located at Adeoti Oshinowo Close, Ogunrounbi Estate, Idimu Lagos.
