VERIFICATION
NV-A extracted screenshots from the clip and subjected it to Google Reverse Image Search, the results showed that the clip is from 2019, not recent.
The search result included a similar video posted on X by @AmeyawDebrah on January 28, 2019 with the caption, “Somewhere in Nigeria This was what happened between Lagos APC governorship candidate, #Sanwoolu and a questioner.”
Further keyword searches led to a report by The Punch which quoted Jubril Gawat, the senior Special Assistant to governor on New media as a source debunking the claim.
The Punch report reads, “The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on New Media, Jubril Gawat, has clarified that a video which started trending online on Wednesday, capturing a heated exchange between Sanwo-Olu and a young woman, is from 2019. In a post on X.com, Gawat explained that the incident occurred on January 28, 2019, during a public event organised by Niteshift Coliseum in Opebi, Lagos.
A look at Gawat’s post on X revealed a lengthy post debunking the claim with a screenshot from the circulating video. The caption reads, “ TRENDING OLD VIDEO: This encounter here happened on January 28, 2019 when Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu was aspiring to be Governor of Lagos State. A young woman stood up to ask a question, just like others had done. She started being rude and raising her voice. No DSS or Police attached to Mr Sanwo-Olu here. The event Organized by Niteshift Coliseum, Opebi. The event continued peacefully afterwards. #SayNoToFakeNews @jidesanwoolu”
He added that at the time, Sanwo-Olu was a governorship aspirant engaging with attendees in a question and answer session.
Other newspapers such TheNEWSGURU, The Legit, and Premium Politics similarly published the report on the same day.
CONCLUSION
The circulating video is MISLEADING as it is an old footage dating back to 2019. The Lagos State Governor’s media aide, Jubril Gawat has clarified that the incident occurred on January 28, 2019 when Babajide Sanwo-Olu was aspiring to be the Governor of Lagos State.
