Is There A Recent Report of Fulani Herders Grazing Farmlands?
Vanguard News reported in February 2024 that the Enugu State Graduate Farmers suffered significant losses due to herders’ activities in Enugu State, Nigeria. Their 35,000-hectare rice farm at the Ojoloko Farm Site in Umuiba, Nara, Nkanu East Local Government Area, was extensively damaged by cattle grazing. Farmers reported that herders allowed their cattle to consume their crops and even set portions of the fields on fire, leading to losses amounting to billions of naira.
In December 2024, further concerns arose when cattles reportedly destroyed a 22.45 km canal at the Ada Rice Farm in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area that was rehabilitated recently. This canal was crucial for irrigating 1,500 hectares of rice fields intended for dry-season farming. The destruction affected water supply and threatened the livelihoods of local farmers, many of whom had previously abandoned their farms due to security fears.
Is The Recent Protest By Women in Enugu Related to a Herders Attack?
On March 4, 2025, The Punch reported that women from Eha-Amufu communities in Enugu State, Nigeria, organised protests against alleged attacks by Fulani herdsmen. The demonstrations involved blocking major highways to draw attention to their grievances. Protesters reported that since 2020, over 150 individuals have been killed, and more than 28 farm settlements have been occupied by attackers claiming that the attacks have reportedly led to the displacement of residents from their homes and farms, disrupting their primary means of livelihood.
During the protest, there was no mention of a recent herders attack but the protesters accused security agencies of failing to protect them and allowing herders to destroy their farms and settlements.
CONCLUSION
The trending video showing cows destroying a cornfield and linking it to the recent protest is MISLEADING as the video is not a recent one and the incident depicted in the footage did not happen in South-east Nigeria but in an East African country.
