Nigeria Has The Largest Data Centre In West Africa And Third Largest In Africa

On August 3, 2025, an X user @AfricaFirsts made claim that Nigeria 🇳🇬 has the largest data centre in West Africa and the third largest in Africa, Rack Centre, which has a capacity of 60 MW. The post contained an image of Rack Centre facility with the caption “Nigeria 🇳🇬 has the largest data centre in West Africa and the third largest in Africa, Rack Centre, which has a capacity of 60 MW”.

When this report was published, this claim had reached over 5,000 people.

VERIFICATION

Rack Centre is a carrier-neutral Tier III certified data centre located in Lagos, Nigeria. According to Rack Centre’s website, it offers colocation, cloud services, disaster recovery, and interconnectivity solutions to businesses and governments across West Africa. Rack Centre’s carrier neutrality allows customers to manage traffic to get better value, lower latency and higher resilience, and creates an open market for partnerships between customers, networks, cloud and content providers, the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria and managed service providers.

CLAIM 1: Rack Centre is the Largest Data Centre in West Africa

VERIFICATION

The data centre commissioned its new LGS2 data centre, which added 12 megawatts (MW) of IT load capacity to its infrastructure. This is combined with the original 1.5 MW from its LGS1 facility, the centre now operates at approximately 13.5 MW of total IT load capacity. With this Rack Centre became the largest data centre in West Africa.

VERDICT

The claim that Rack Centre is the Largest Data Centre in West Africa is TRUE.

CLAIM 2: Rack Centre is the Third Largest in Africa

VERIFICATION

According to information from The Africa exponent and other sources as at July 2025, Rack Centre is not among the three Largest Data Centres in Africa. Teraco Data Environment in South Africa is the first, Africa Data Centres in Johannesburg, still in South Africa is the second, while Maroc Datapark, located in  Morocco, is third. Rack Centre, Nigeria is the fifth largest data centre in Africa.

VERDICT

The claim that Rack Centre is the third largest data centre in Africa is MISLEADING.

CLAIM 3: Rack Centre Has 60 Megawatts Capacity

VERIFICATION

As of March 2025, Rack Centre’s total installed capacity is around 13.5 megawatt (MW). While Rack Centre has long-term expansion goals, there is no evidence that the current facility has reached 60 MW.

VERDICT

The claim that Rack Centre Has 60 MW Capacity is FALSE

CONCLUSION

Rack Centre is a major player in Africa’s digital infrastructure landscape, but the claim that it is the largest in West Africa is TRUE and backed by recent expansions and verifiable capacity figures. However, the assertion that it is the third largest in Africa is MISLEADING, as several larger facilities exist in South Africa, and Morocco. While the claim that Rack Centre has a 60 MW capacity is FALSE, the facilities owned by Rack currently stand at approximately 13.5 MW, as of 2025.
