On November 21, 2024, an X user with the handle @whatsappblog9ja posted a collage image on the platform with the caption saying “Nigerian Woman Mistakenly Kk!LL Her Only Daughter While Beàting Her For Stealing Meat From Her Pot Of Soup,”
The claim has garnered over 17,500 views, 16 comments, 4 reposts and quotes, 11 likes and 4 bookmarks as of the time this report was published. Other users commented on the post with @dijayso saying, “This is the result when you don’t know when to stop while scolding a child,” while @kolakehinde77 said, “She should be mistakenly locked up.”
VERIFICATION
The image was uploaded on Google Lens exact matches showed the same image has been online since February 2018.
The image was used on the blogs Nairaland Forum, Linda Ikeji’s Blog, Gossipmill.com and Newsfetchers.com with different titles but the central point in all the titles was that a lady was caught after allegedly poisoning her child in Delta State.
According to Linda Ikeji’s Blog, a facebook user with the name Temi Meg, posted the video on her timeline, noting that the woman was accused of poisoning her child to death and that the incident happened at Amukpe old Eku road Sapele in Delta State on February 25, 2018.
NV-A conducted a keyword search using the words; ‘woman poison child to death in delta state nigeria 2018’ to verify if there were any related reports. The results includes news articles from Tori.ng and 9jaflaver, The news content in Tori.ng and 9jaflaver corroborated what the image search result has earlier established and quoted the same Facebook source but the embedded link to the page said the post was no longer available . The YouTube link for the same video is no longer available as well.
Multiple sources confirm that the image used in the claim made by @whatsappblog9ja on X is not related to a story of a woman killing her only child in 2024.
CONCLUSION
The claim that a lady beat her only daughter to death for stealing meat from her pot of soup is MISLEADING as the image accompanying the claim has been online since 2018. Several sources also confirm that it is related to an incident in Delta State where a woman poisoned her child.
