Did Vice President Kashim Shettima Say that Nigeria is Being Ruled by Seyi Tinubu?

On April 11, 2025 a Facebook user @IPOBBIAFRANEWS24/7 posted a picture of Nigeria’s vice president, Kashim Shettima, with a caption that reads: 

“Breaking news: It’s not president Tinubu who’s truly running the country– It’s his son Seyi Tinubu. The president can barely write or see clearly, so Seyi handles everything behind the scenes. Nigerians must rise and speak up now!”– VIP Kashim Shettima raises the alarm. As the vice president of Nigeria, I haven’t been given the responsibility I deserve. I’m simply being used as a symbolic figure from the North– just to create the illusion that all is well. But the truth is, nothing is well.”  

The post was also accompanied by a link for users to click on and get the full speech attributed to the Vice President. As at the time of filing this report, the post had gained 3 likes, 5 comments and 3 shares. 

VERIFICATION 

To verify this claim, NV-A conducted a related keyword search. Our search results came back with no credible news reports or articles to back up this claim. We only found similar claims in this YouTube video published on March 21, 2025 and the same claim on another Facebook post posted on April 11, 2025. Further checks revealed a report from two months ago by Africa Check, debunking a similar claim.

The fact-checker also checked out the link attached to the post which was mentioned in the post to have the full speech of the Vice President. However, what we found was that the link leads to a variety of betting sites with no traces of any such statement being made by the Vice President. 

CONCLUSION

The claim that Vice President Kashim Shettima said Nigeria is being ruled by the son of the President, Seyi Tinubu, is FALSE. No credible report has been made to support such a claim. The Facebook post is a hoax and a clickbait to redirect users to betting sites.
