VERIFICATION
Piles, or hemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum. They can result from straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation, pregnancy, or sitting for long periods. Symptoms may include pain, bleeding, itching, and discomfort.
Scientific Evidence of Bitter Kola and Onion’s Benefits
According to the National Institute of Health, bitter kola is known in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies found that it may have health benefits such as antimicrobial or liver-protective effects. However, there is no clinical or scientific evidence that it treats or cures hemorrhoids.
Onions are rich in antioxidants and have some anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. However, there is no credible research supporting their use in curing piles when taken as tea or in combination with bitter kola.
Medical Advice From Experts
Dr Tanko Idris, with Wuse District Hospital, Abuja, debunked the claim, stating that “people just take concoctions that might end up damaging their liver and/or kidney, since these things are not well-refined”, noting that “piles is just a minor swelling that can be treated by taking warm sit-baths or undergoing a very minor surgery if it gets severe. Dr Idris explained that, “every human has hemorrhoids, or ‘piles’, as they are a normal part of the anal and rectal anatomy.” He advised that people should not be scared of visiting the hospital for regular checks.
Mrs Veronica Uloko, a nurse with the Primary Healthcare Center, Pyakasa, Abuja, noted that “most people have now refrained from visiting the hospitals for proper medical checks and treatment, but rather prefer to drink these herbal mixtures that are not well processed and with no proper dosage.” She added that “piles is nothing that serious and can be corrected by simply eating food rich in fiber or even using over-the-counter topical treatments or suppositories that are recommended by the doctor.”
CONCLUSION
The claim that drinking tea made from boiling a mixture of bitterkola with onions will lead to a complete healing from pile is MISLEADING. It is not supported by scientific evidence and medical experts warn against drinking unregulated concoctions that could damage their vital organs.
