VERIFICATION
The Trans-Guinean Railway Project was launched as part of the broader Simandou 2040 Initiative to transport iron ore from the Simandou mines in southeastern Guinea to the Atlantic port of Matakong. In 2023, the Compagnie du TransGuinéen (CTG), a joint venture between the Guinean government and mining companies Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS) and Rio Tinto SimFer, signed an agreement to build and equip the railway network.
According to reports, Guinea received four locomotives under the Trans-Guinean Rail Project, a key part of the Simandou iron ore development plan. The locomotives were manufactured by Wabtec Corporation, an American rail technology firm, through its Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Factory in Bihar, India. These trains are intended for the Trans-Guinean Railway, which will link the Simandou mining site in southeastern Guinea to the port of Matakong, enhancing the country's mining and export capacity.
The Simandou Project is one of the world’s largest and most ambitious mining and infrastructure ventures. This project is located in southeastern Guinea and Simandou contains the world’s largest untapped high-grade iron ore deposit, estimated at over 2.4 billion tonnes. The aim is to transform Guinea into a major global player in iron ore production while boosting local infrastructure. This 650-kilometre Trans-Guinean Railway line stretching from the Simandou mountains in Beyla Prefecture to the port of Matakong on the Atlantic coast is central to the project. The railway will facilitate the transport of iron ore, agricultural produce, and passengers, and promote economic diversification.
All available reports refer to the locomotives as imports or deliveries rather than domestic productions. There is no record or official statement from the Guinean Government indicating that Guinea currently has the industrial capacity to manufacture or assemble locomotives domestically. The Guinean Ministry of Transport has not confirmed any local production or assembly of trains within the country. The official narrative emphasises partnerships with international companies rather than domestic manufacturing achievements.
The fact checker further carried out a reverse search of the image in the claim using google lens. Results reveal that this image was published about two weeks ago in various reports linked with the Simandou project
CONCLUSION
The claim that Guinea has received and deployed its first four domestically produced trains is FALSE. While Guinea has indeed received four locomotives, credible reports confirm that these trains were manufactured in India and delivered under the Trans-Guinean Railway Project, a major infrastructure partnership supporting the country’s mining and transport sectors. There is no supporting evidence that Guinea has produced or assembled any trains domestically.
